April is Parkinson's Awareness Month
About 1 million people in the United States have Parkinson’s disease. As the population ages, it is predicted that those numbers will continue to increase. There is no cure for this neurodegenerative brain disease, which is characterized by muscle stiffness, slowness in movement, and tremor.
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. People across the country are urged to learn more about Parkinson’s disease and advocate for advanced treatment and care for those afflicted with the disease.
The National Parkinson’s Foundation offers many opportunities to support the cause. During Parkinson’s Awareness Month, you can:
- Participate in the Moving Day march, which takes place across the country benefitting expansion services and programs within local communities.
- Join Team Hope for Parkinson’s and organize or sponsor marathon events with athletes to help raise money for research, treatment, and a cure.
- Host your own event, such as a car wash or bake sale or arrange running, biking, and swimming events.
The National Parkinson’s Foundation is a proven advocate for those with Parkinson’s disease and caregivers. As a result of the foundation and Parkinson’s Awareness Month, most people now have access to speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other health allied professionals. Thanks to participation and monetary contributions, advancing knowledge has been attained through research to offer more hope for those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease.
